Course Summary

In Sociology, we explore how the world works and what to do about it. We look at wider social issues and howthey impact you. We aim to answer questions such as:
Does our class, our gender or our race affect our decisions, or do we have free will?
Are we becoming less religious as a society?
Why is 93% of our prison population male?
What are the social issues facing our area and how can we fix them?

The type of person who will enjoy Sociology will be someone who has an enquiring and critical mind andenjoys being challenged by new ideas.

Course Details

Year 12 Course Content:

  • Theories and functions of the family
  • Changing patterns of marriage, divorce andchildbearing and family diversity
  • Role of the education system, how it is shaped by theworld of work, and the hidden curriculum
  • The methods of research that sociologists use to studysociety and education

Year 13 Course Content:

  • The media and crime
  • Crime control, surveillance, prevention, punishmentand the justice system
  • Religious organisations, including cults, churches andNew Age movements
  • The relationship between social groups and religiousorganisations, beliefs and practices

Entry requirements

You will need to meet our general entry requirements for Level 3 study, which is 5 GCSE passes including English.

Your next steps...

Many Sociology students go on to study Humanities, English or Social Science related degrees at university.Other destinations include Nursing, Teaching, Pharmacy, Medicine and other Science based courses. Sociology provides an excellent background for careers in law, journalism, teaching, social work, social policy, nursing and a range of management and business areas.
