Course Summary

If you have a passion for Films and are a budding screen writer this is the course for you. Studying Film willincrease your knowledge of the industry and how film and film techniques has evolved from the 1920’s. Film isone of the most relevant subjects today. Did you know that every nine days, as much moving image isuploaded to YouTube as the BBC has broadcast in its entire history?

Course Details

A Level students will study: Global Film, Documentary, Silent Film, Experimental Film and Short Films.

You will study the key elements of film form including cinematography, mise en scè ne, editing, sound andperformance. You will also study the contexts of your chosen films and what was happening when the filmwas made. What can the film tell us about history and society at that time?

You will study the films in terms of the representations they present or challenge. The coursework will involvewriting a screen play and creating a digital storyboard.

Entry requirements

As well as meeting our general entry requirements for Level 3 study (5 GCSE passes including a pass in English), a grade 5 in GCSE English Language is also desirable.

The study of film is highly regarded. Film Studies has been an academic discipline within universities for over50 years and is regarded as an academic subject in its own right. Oxford and Cambridge are now offeringMasters and PHD courses in Film Studies and Screen Arts. Russell Group universities accept Film Studies as anappropriate A level qualification when prospective students apply to study a humanities or arts relateddiscipline. Employment in the screen industries has grown by over 20% since 2009 and will substantiallyoutpace the economy wide increase of 3% if the skills shortages in this area are fulfilled. Career paths forstudents of Film may, of course, include practical avenues such as Film-Making, Directing, Producing andEditing but a qualification in Film Studies also allows you to move into more theoretical pathways such as FilmCriticism, Journalism, Teaching and Education.
