Level 1 in Pre-Internship

Your learning is delivered in small, supportive classes where tutors take the time to understand your strengths, needs, and aspirations. This nurturing environment helps you build the confidence, knowledge, and practical skills you need to succeed in the workplace, while also developing positive working habits and a strong sense of independence.

A key feature of the Supported Internship Programme is the substantial work placement element, giving you the opportunity to spend time in real workplace settings and gain first-hand experience of what employers expect. Through these placements, you can develop practical job skills, improve your communication and teamwork, and understand the routines and responsibilities involved in real employment.

By combining classroom learning with meaningful work experience, the programme supports you to make a smooth transition into the world of work and prepares you for future employment opportunities.

Course Highlights:

• Your classroom sessions focus on employability skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and following workplace routines.
• You also cover personal development and independent living topics, including managing money, travel training, and health and wellbeing, to help you prepare for adult life.
• Your tutors and learning support assistants work closely with you, providing individualised support to meet your communication, cognitive, and social needs.
• Your lessons are interactive and practical, using role play, discussions, and scenario-based learning to develop real-world understanding.
• You will complete a minimum of 60 hours of work placement across the academic year, supported by the college’s work placement team.
• You will receive ongoing support from a Job Coach, who helps you settle into your placement, learn workplace routines, and develop independence.

Assessment focuses on practical achievement, personal growth, and employability skills. You will work towards a Level 1 vocational employability qualification, demonstrating your skills through observation, practical tasks, discussions, and reflective journals. Evidence of your progress is collected in a portfolio, which may include photographs, feedback from employers, tutor observations, and your own self-assessment. There are no formal exams; instead, your progress is assessed continuously to recognise the real skills, confidence, and independence you develop over time. You will also receive regular feedback to help you identify your strengths, set goals, and reflect on your development both in college and in the workplace.

No qualifications are required.

You will receive wraparound support throughout the programme, including an individual learning plan (ILP), one-to-one mentoring, and access to Hull College’s specialist SEND services. Staff work closely with your parents or carers, as well as external professionals, to make sure you have a positive, consistent, and well-supported learning experience.

When you complete the programme, you will be well prepared to progress into supported employment or paid work, apprenticeships or traineeships, further vocational study at Level 2, or community-based learning and independent living programmes.
