Course Summary

If you’re passionate about food and want to take your first step into a professional kitchen, this course will introduce you to the core skills and knowledge needed to begin your culinary journey. You’ll learn how to prepare and cook a range of dishes while developing safe working practices, organisation skills and confidence in a realistic training kitchen environment.

Throughout the programme, you will explore a variety of cooking methods including boiling, baking, roasting, grilling and frying, alongside learning about food safety, hygiene and healthier eating. Your tutors will support you in developing practical skills step by step, helping you build the confidence to work as part of a kitchen team and prepare for further study within hospitality.

Learning is practical, supportive and designed to help you grow both personally and professionally. You’ll develop teamwork, communication and employability skills while gaining a clear understanding of what it takes to succeed in the fast-paced world of catering.

• Introduction to working within the hospitality industry

How will it be delivered and assessed?

This course is delivered through a combination of practical kitchen sessions, tutor demonstrations and classroom activities. You will spend most of your time developing your cooking skills while also building the knowledge needed to work safely and professionally in a kitchen environment.

Assessment takes place through practical observations, assignments and short theory tasks, allowing you to demonstrate your progress throughout the course.

Entry requirements

4 x GCSEs at grade 2(E) or above, including English.
