Course Summary

If you’re interested in hair or beauty but not quite ready for Level 2 study, this course gives you the perfect starting point. You’ll develop the confidence, skills and professional behaviours needed to begin your journey in a salon environment while gaining a Level 1 certificate in hairdressing.

Throughout the course, you will explore the basics of hair styling, presentation and customer service while building your personal and employability skills. You’ll practise technical skills such as dressing, plaiting and twisting hair, alongside learning how to present yourself professionally, work as part of a team and communicate with clients.

English and maths are an important part of your learning, helping you develop skills needed for real salon work, such as completing consultation cards, calculating product ratios, understanding costs and building confidence with money handling. You’ll gain experience working in one of our fantastic on-site salons, preparing you for progression onto Level 2 Hairdressing qualifications delivered at Salon QG.

These units help you build the confidence and ability to progress into further training within the hair and beauty industry.


How will it be delivered and assessed?

This course combines practical salon sessions, demonstrations and classroom-based learning. You’ll develop your skills step by step, practising techniques on training heads and within the college salon while building the knowledge needed to work safely and professionally.

Assessment takes place through practical observations, assignments and portfolio work, allowing you to demonstrate your progress throughout the year.

Maths and English at 1(G) or above

Your next steps...

After completing this course, you can progress onto the Level 2 in Hairdressing at Hull College’s Salon QG. You may also choose to move into an apprenticeship or junior salon role as you continue building your career within the hair and beauty industry.
