Course Summary

This programme provides you with the essential knowledge and practical skills you need to progress in the fabrication and welding industry. Building on core engineering principles, you will learn advanced welding techniques, fabrication processes, and workshop practices used across a wide range of engineering sectors. You will develop your competence in producing welded joints using different methods, interpreting technical drawings, preparing materials, and carrying out fabrication tasks to industry standards.

On this programme, you will learn through a combination of classroom theory and practical workshop sessions. In the classroom, you will explore topics such as engineering materials, health and safety, and the science behind welding and fabrication processes. In the workshop, you will put your knowledge into practice through real-world tasks, including welding in various positions, cutting, forming, and assembling metal components. You will strengthen your understanding of engineering principles, materials, processes, and safe working practices.

This qualification provides a strong pathway for you to progress into an apprenticeship or further technical training, equipping you with the skills and confidence to succeed in a skilled and in-demand trade.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

This programme is delivered through a balanced blend of practical workshop training and classroom-based theory. Around half of your time will be spent developing essential knowledge in areas such as engineering principles, materials, and safe working practices, while the other half focuses on hands-on fabrication and welding tasks in our fully equipped workshops. You will develop and demonstrate your skills through real-world projects, weld tests, and fabrication activities that reflect industry standards.

Assessment includes two online exams covering the underpinning theory, as well as ongoing practical assessments that evaluate your welding ability, fabrication techniques, and completion of set workshop tasks. This structured approach ensures you build both the technical understanding and practical competence required for progression into an apprenticeship.

Entry requirements

4 x GCSEs at grade 3(D) or above, including Maths and English.

Your next steps...

After successfully completing this programme, you can progress directly into a fabrication and welding apprenticeship, where you’ll continue developing your skills in a real working environment. Alternatively, you may choose to advance onto Level 3 Engineering or Level 3 Fabrication and Welding, allowing you to deepen your technical knowledge and specialise further within the engineering sector. Both progression routes give you the opportunity to build your expertise and take the next step toward becoming a fully skilled and industry-ready fabricator-welder.
