Course Summary

This course is offered over a two-year period and is equivalent to one A Level designed to be studied as part of a wider programme. It will provide you with a broad introduction to working with children in the early years. In addition, you will have the opportunity to gain 50 hours of practical experience working in an early years setting.

This qualification will prepare you for a range of higher education courses and job roles related to the childcare sector. It provides progression by being accepted alongside other qualifications at the same level and adding value to them.

If you are looking for a career in teaching, social work or progression to working in the early years sector, this course is for you.

Course Details

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

The course allows you to engage in a broad investigation of the children’s care and education sector (0-8 years). There are four mandatory units to be studied which are:

  • Children’s Development (externally examined)
  • Keeping Children Safe (externally examined)
  • Play and Learning
  • Research and Reflective Practice in an Early Childhood Setting
Additionally, you will gain experience of working in the real environment of an early years setting.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades 4-9 including English and Maths.

During the two years you will be offered the opportunity to engage in a range of talks and workshops delivered by professionals specialising in childcare services including:

Healthy Lifestyle Teams
Family Hubbs
Safeguarding
Children’s Dental Advisor
EYP working in the childcare sector

In addition, you will undertake and complete a Level 3 Paediatric First Aid qualification.

PROGRESSION

This qualification is designed to support progression to higher education when taken as part of a programme of study that includes other BTEC Nationals or A Levels. However, it also supports progression into apprenticeship training and employment.
