Course Summary

This programme is the equivalent of one A Level and provides a broad basis of study for the health science sector. You will develop the knowledge, skills and techniques found in real-life medical science situations, including research, practical laboratory work, scientific testing and problem-solving and will build on key ideas in biology.

Course Details

You will explore the biological principles that underpin human biology and study how the human body functions at a genetic, cellular and tissue level. You’ll gain understanding of how human biology and lifestyle factors interact to affect the health of individuals and populations and explore the many ways that this knowledge can be applied in order to improve diagnostic and health outcomes. You will carry out your own investigation into the effect of antimicrobial agents on the growth of microorganisms and recognise the importance of disease management to modern human society.

WHO IS THE COURSE AIMED AT?

This course is for you if you enjoyed the elements of human-related biology when studying GCSE, you enjoy practical scientific working and you wish to pursue a career in the health or science sector.

How will it be delivered and assessed?


Entry requirements

You must have a minimum of four GCSEs at grade 9-4, including Maths and English Language. Additionally, you will need a minimum of a grade 5-5 in combined science or grade 5’s in separate sciences.

There will be opportunities to meet with experts in the field from local industry and universities and to take part in practical sessions using state of the art biotechnology.

PROGRESSION

This course is designed to support progression to higher education when taken as part of a programme of study that includes other AAQs or A Levels. Alternatively, you may progress onto an apprenticeship in an associated industry or seek employment in related fields

OUTCOMES

Typical progression routes include further study or employment within fields including Biological Sciences, Forensic Biology, Paramedic Science, Nutrition, Physiotherapy, Sport and Exercise Science, Psychology, Midwifery and Nursing.
