Course Summary
Chemistry is the study of matter and its interactions with other matter and energy. Understanding chemistry helps you to understand the world around you. Cooking is chemistry. Everything you can touch or taste or smell is a chemical. When you study chemistry, you come to understand about how things work.
Course Details
To support the new linear qualifications both AS and A level Chemistry has been split into 3 common areas of Chemistry:
Organic Chemistry
Topics such as: Synthesis, alcohols, nomenclature, reaction mechanisms and chemical analysis
Inorganic Chemistry
Topics such as: Periodicity, the halogens and the alkaline earth metals.
Physical Chemistry
Topics such as: Thermodynamics, kinetics, energetics and equilibria

Entry requirements
5 GCSEs at a 4 or above including: English Language at 5 & Mathematics at 6 or above.
Chemistry/Science GCSE at 6 or above.
Course availability is at the discretion of the Sixth Form Team.
Your next steps...
Many students continue onto a Chemistry degree but skills gained are also a gateway into degrees such as medical sciences, law and journalism to name a few. An A level qualification in Chemistry shows many skills valued by employers also such as problem solving, data handling and practical organisiation.
