A Level in Biology

Biology is one of the most popular A Level subjects in the country, attracting students studying a wide range of other subjects. The AS qualification is studied over one year with the A level qualification taking two. A level Biology builds on the concepts and skills that were gained throughout the GCSE course and presents Biology as exciting, challenging and relevant to our everyday lives as well as allowing the opportunities investigate new areas.

The course specification is still being finalised by AQA but is likely to contain units on

1 Biological molecules

2 Cells

3 Organisms exchange substances with their environment

4 Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms

The course is delivered in a variety of styles including, whole class and smaller group teaching, also a large amount of independent learning is required but always supported by the teacher. Practical work is used extensively to support the understanding of concepts and there are a variety of field trips.

Students must have a minimum of 5 GCSE qualifications including English Language and Maths at 5 or above, they are required to have two Science GCSE qualifications at a minimum of grade 6

Course availability is at the discretion of the Sixth Form Team.

Many students enjoy the Biology so much they eventually choose a Biology related degree course. Others go on to careers in law, computing, accounting or teaching. So, whatever field you will eventually work in, you will find biology a very rewarding and challenging course which will develop many of the skills essential for a successful career.
