Course Summary

Are you ready to take the first step towards a fulfilling and meaningful career in the public services? This course provides a powerful introduction to life in the uniformed services, including the Fire and Rescue Service, Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force, and other key public service roles. It’s designed to give you a real insight into what it takes to succeed in some of the most physically demanding and vital careers in the UK.

Course Details

  • Teamwork – Work closely with others to achieve shared goals, a core component in public service careers
  • Leadership – Take the lead in group activities, learning how to motivate, delegate and inspire
  • Rules and regulations – Understand the key laws, codes of conduct and ethical frameworks public services must follow
  • Problem solving – Tackle practical challenges and develop strategic thinking in high-pressure scenarios
  • Physical training – Improve your fitness through structured activities and learn about its relevance in uniformed roles
  • Organising events – Plan and deliver group projects or events, developing communication, planning and evaluation skills
  • Anatomy – Study the human body and its systems crucial for understanding physical performance and first aid
  • First aid – Gain practical skills in emergency first aid, including CPR, bandaging and responding to incidents
  • Safeguarding – Understand how to protect individuals, recognise signs of harm and follow correct reporting procedures
  • Discipline – Learn the importance of self-control, respect, routine and behaviour standards expected in public services

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Work experience - You’ll have the chance to complete 20 hours of work experience, either within the organisation or through external placements. Opportunities may include working with local youth organisations, schools, and public sector organisations. You’ll also have the chance to take part in events with the RAF, Royal Marines, Army, and Police. These experiences can count towards your work experience hours and offer valuable insights into careers in the Uniformed Services.

Trips, visits & guest speakers - To help bring your learning to life, you may have the opportunity to take part in a range of trips, visits, and guest speaker sessions from organisations within the public services and community. These may include visits from or trips to organisations such as Humberside Police, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, and St Johns ambulance, where you can learn about how emergency services respond to incidents and protect the public. You may also take part in community volunteering activities, sports events, and fitness challenges. There may be opportunities to visit courts or community organisations to help you understand how the justice system works.

Trips and visiting speakers will give you a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities within the public services and help you think about possible careers in the future.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and maths.
