Course Summary

You will be guided by our outstanding tutors and have access to our excellent workshops as we explore all the skills and knowledge needed to help you on your career pathway.

On each level you will undertake a range of units all designed to give you the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in Carpentry & Joinery. You will learn about construction technology, how to manufacture and use woodwork joints, safe use and maintenance of tools, and safe use of power tools. As you progress through the levels, you will also learn about erecting structural carcassing, first and second fixing, and the difference between the structural work and finishing work, which takes place after plastering.

Course Details

What you will study on Level 2:

  • How to carry out safe working practices in construction
  • Information, quantities and communicating with others
  • Building methods and construction technology
  • First fixing operations
  • Second fixing operations
  • Erecting structural carcassing
  • Building maintenance
  • Circular saws and their uses

Work experience is encouraged but is not compulsory.

As part of the study programme, tutors will endeavor to arrange guest speakers and visits to relevant work environments and/or manufacturers to gain an understanding of the processes of the industry. Parental/guardian permission for trip is essential and will be sought at the beginning of the course to prevent delays or disappointment.

Entry requirements

3 GCSEs at grade 3 or above, preferably including either English or Maths

Progression from Level 1 to 2 would also require a pass at the lower-level vocational course
