Course Summary

These College-based qualifications are hands-on, practical courses, which are studied by people who want to be employed as site joiners.

The course consists of eight units, which are broken into underpinning knowledge and practical units.

If you work in the industry, you can build this course up into a full NVQ qualification by obtaining evidence of your abilities.

Course Details

What you will learn:

  • How to carry out safe working practices in construction
  • Information, quantities and communicating with others
  • Building methods and construction technology
  • First fixing operations
  • Second fixing operations
  • Erecting structural carcassing
  • Building maintenance
  • Circular saws and their uses

Each unit has an end test. You will also do a practical assignment and an online test based on the eight units.

Work experience - There is an expectation each learner will undertake work experience, This can be arranged by the learner with the help of the college team to ensure that the placement is maintaining a safe working environment or potentially work experience may be offered through the colleges companies already providing placements for apprentices.

Trips, visits & guest speakers - As part of the study Programme, Learners will have the opportunity to visit relevant work environments and/or manufacturers to gain an understanding of the processes of the industry. Parental/guardian permission for trip is essential and will be sought at the beginning of the course to prevent delays or disappointment.

Entry requirements

3 GCSEs at grade 3 or above, preferably including either English or Maths. Progression from Level 1 to 2 and from Level 2 to 3 would also require a pass at the lower-level vocational course
