Course Summary

If you’re interested in the study of matter, energy and the interaction between them, bring out your inventive and industrious nature with A Level Physics.

Physics is a necessity for further study of Physics, Astronomy and Engineering courses. It is also a recommended course for those who wish to study Maths, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary studies and most medical courses in Higher Education. It is an extremely well regarded subject as it shows you have the skills to analyse problems, and prepare and implement solutions. It will help develop an analytical mind and most employers and universities really respect and look for these skills.

With this course you will also get the opportunity to participate in a University of Hull curriculum enhancement project on the astrophysics of star birth and death.

WHO IS THE COURSE AIMED AT?

This course is for you if you are interested in Physics or if you simply enjoy it! If you have an interest in progressing onto university on any of the courses listed above, then A Level Physics will either be a ‘must have it’ requirement or ‘would be useful if you had it’.

Course Details

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

• The Foundations of Physics – This covers the basic skills needed to study physics at advanced level.

• Forces and Motion – This looks at how objects move and what causes this to happen. It also looks at how materials behave under stress.
• Electrons, Waves & Particles – This looks at basic electrical circuits, different types of waves and how these scientific models can be used to explain the world around us.

In your second year you will study:

• The Newtonian World – This develops the work from the first year in mechanics including how objects rotate and oscillate backwards and forwards. It also looks at how gases behave and how heat energy affects materials.
• Frontiers of Modern Physics – This introduces the ideas of Electromagnetism, Capacitors and Radioactivity.
• You will then study three areas where the physics you have studied is used:
o Medical Imaging
o Particle Physics
o Astro Physics

How will it be delivered and assessed?


Entry requirements

You must have:
Five GCSE grades 9-4
A minimum GCSE grade average of 5.3
A grade 4 or higher in GCSE English Language
A grade 6 or higher in GCSE Physics, or a 6-6 in Combined Science
A grade 6 or higher in GCSE Maths.

Ideally, you should also have intentions of studying A Level Mathematics.

EXPERIENCES

This course will provide you with the opportunity to develop your knowledge of Physics and prepare for a career in STEM. You will be given the chance to attend workshops and talks from industry professionals and academics, as well as visit leading universities to understand where your future could take you. Within college, you will be provided with the option to take part in revision and study sessions which will enhance your learning and prepare you for your exams.


PROGRESSION

A Level Physics is the perfect subject to lead onto a science or STEM based subject at university. Physics itself is a good option, as are subjects like Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Medicine or Engineering. You may also choose to complete a degree in a specialist area, such as Astrophysics.

OUTCOMES

Students who complete a qualification in Physics go on to a wide variety of jobs. These can include: Clinical Scientist, Geophysicist, Meteorologist, Techincal Writer, Astrophysicist or Teacher, to name a few.
