Course Summary

If you are creative and imaginative and enjoy investigating ideas and looking at things in different ways, you should consider A Level graphic communication.

You will enjoy developing your understanding of the visual world, learning practical skills and responding to ideas and issues in ways that are personal to you. Graphic communication opens the door to many fascinating and rewarding specialisms and careers in industry, commerce and the media.

WHO IS THE COURSE AIMED AT?

This course is for you if you want a successful career in one of the many fields of visual design. It is an ideal stepping stone to further study at university or a foundation art and design L3/4 one year course.

Course Details

In this course you will develop your knowledge of materials and techniques, and the skills to communicate ideas and information visually. It will help you to develop an effective personal visual language and develop your understanding of historical and contemporary influences on design.

You will explore advertising, packaging design, design for print, illustration, communication graphics, branding, multimedia, motion graphics, and more. You will learn how to use the three main software’s used within industry; Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Alongside working on the computers, you will also be using traditional methods such as drawing, painting, printmaking and 3D techniques to create your designs.

Entry requirements

You must have a minimum of five GCSEs at grades 9-4, including English Language, Maths.

It is preferable that you have a minimum of a grade 4 at GCSE or Level 2 Merit in an art-based subject. If you don’t, you will need to bring a portfolio of work to your interview which we will review.

EXPERIENCES

This course will provide you with the opportunity to take part in trips to exhibitions and galleries, to learn how a graphic communication works first hand. You will also experience talks from visiting speakers and visit many universities to help you to understand the best career pathway for you.

PROGRESSION

At the end of this two year course, you will have a portfolio that is tailored to who you are as a creative designer. Your portfolio will showcase your best work but also the developmental stages that got you there. This portfolio can then be used for apprenticeships, jobs in the creative industry or higher education such as University or the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design here at Wilberforce.

OUTCOMES

Students who complete a qualification in Graphic Communication go on to a wide variety of jobs across different industries. These can include: advertising, animator, designer for film and television, exhibition designer, illustrator, interior and spatial design, marketing, publishing, scientific or medical illustrator, studio manager, teacher, typographer, web and app designer to name a few.
