Once your application is submitted, we will contact you via your personal email address. If you wish to change your course choices, this can be done at your interview—there is no need to submit a new application.

Are you thinking of a career in law and planning to apply to university? If you like researching, reading, discussing and arguing and have an interest in how the Law works, then this could be the course for you. Law is fascinating because it is all around us. If you travelled to us by road, the speed limits along the roads are set by law. The number of people allowed on the bus are set by law. The bus fare you paid is set by law. These are just a few examples of how Law works.

Law is academic, challenging and practical and is a subject well-respected by universities as a good basis for studying anything, as it teaches you a wide variety of skills, including essay writing, research and analysis.

WHO IS THE COURSE AIMED AT?

This course is for you if:

• You have an interest in what is going on around you

• You enjoy researching and reading

• You like discussing and arguing

• You are planning to apply to university

• You are thinking of a career in law

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

During the first year of the course you will study the following units:

• The English Legal System – an insight into the personal of the courts and an understanding of court mechanism

• Criminal Law – a detailed study into the law of murder, manslaughter, theft, robbery, burglary and assaults

• Law Making – looks at where our law comes from Parliament, Judges and Europe

In the second year you will study:

• The Law of Tort

• Contract Law

• The Nature of Law

You must have a minimum of five GCSEs grades 9-4, including English Language and Maths.

EXPERIENCES

This course will provide you with the perfect base for a career in Law or opportunity to explore what Law can help you to achieve. Within college, as part of our Upskilling Programme, why not take part in the Debating Society and compete regionally and nationally in competitions? We also have our Mooting team that recently came second in an event at the University of Hull – a brilliant addition to any personal statement! As well as this, you will be given the chance to hear from many visiting speakers and industry professionals, as well as visiting the courts in Hull to see your learning in action.

PROGRESSION

If you choose to continue your studies of Law there are many courses in higher education to choose from, some of which specialise in Law whilst others offer a chance to combine subjects. A Level Law is also a good option if you are looking for an apprenticeship or to go straight into work – it is highly valued by sectors like the Police Force and Probation Services.

OUTCOMES

Students who complete a qualification in Law go on to a wide variety of jobs. These can include: Solicitor, Barrister, Paralegal, Advice Worker, Human Resources Officer, Data Analyst or Teacher, to name a few.
