Take a fascinating and vibrant look at the past, travel along the passage of time and explore either medieval or modern history. “The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.” L. P. Hartley.

You should study history to learn about how and why the world and its people became what they are today. History is full of fascinating stories and characters whose decisions have shaped both the past and the present. History offers you the opportunity to delve below the surface and investigate why events happen and who is responsible. It gives you the chance to evaluate the significance of events and the impact of individuals and to understand who you are.

This is a facilitating subject for the leading universities and is encouraged as an entry qualification for many courses.

WHO IS THE COURSE AIMED AT?

This course is for you if you have an interest in the past and you enjoy researching topics. It is also a good subject for you if you like discussing and arguing, as well as visiting historic sites. WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

In the first year of this two-year course you will study:

• Paper 1: 1C – The Tudors 1485-1603

In the second year, you will move onto:

• Paper 2: 2N – Revolution and Dictatorship. Russia 1917-1953

Coursework option: 3,500-4,500 word essay on the causes of the European Witch Craze 1550-1700

You must have a minimum of five GCSEs grades 9-4, including English Language and Maths and a minimum GCSE average of 5.3.

EXPERIENCES

This course will provide you with the opportunity to see the past in the present. Visits to Beverley Minster and other historic landmarks in the local area punctuate your learning and help you to see the impact these monuments had on the region and the wider world. You will also visit leading universities and hear from guest speakers to further enhance your learning and help you to explore new viewpoints.

PROGRESSION

History is a subject that can support learning in most other Humanities courses. For those considering university, subjects like History, English, Archaeology, Journalism and Law are all good options, though the critical thinking and literacy skills this course will give you are easily applied to most subjects.

OUTCOMES

Students who complete a qualification in History go on to a wide variety of jobs. These can include: Museum Curator, Librarian, Archivist, Archaeologist, Conservation Officer or Teacher, to name a few.
