Course Summary

Discover the world around you, develop your research skills and learn about the global issues affecting the environment in which we live.

Studying Geography will develop your skills in constructing arguments and weighing up positions. It will also develop your oral and written communication skills and improve your ability to analyse. Most people study Geography because they have a genuine interest in the subject and the wider world.

Geography is recognised as a strong academic subject that fits well with a wide range of other A Levels from across the science and arts spectrum.

WHO IS THE COURSE AIMED AT?

This course is for you if you are looking for an A Level with an excellent reputation with universities and employers, where you can also discover the world around you. This course will also allow you to study a really broad range of topics, fitting well with many other A Levels. It will particularly suit you if you like to:

• Discover the world around you

• Develop your research skills

• Learn about global issues that are affecting the environment

Course Details

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

In your first year you will study:

• Coastal systems and landscapes

• Hazards

• Contemporary urban environments

In your second year you will study:

• Water and carbon cycles

• Changing places

• Global systems and governance

As part of the course, you will gain the ability to construct written arguments to questions and be able to offer a personal viewpoint.

Entry requirements

You must have a minimum of five GCSE grades 9-4, including Maths and English Language at least grade 5. Ideally, you will have studied geography at GCSE and achieved at least a grade 5

EXPERIENCES

This course will provide you with the opportunity to put your Geography skills to use in the real world, with trips to places like Filey, Manchester and Wales all taking place. Fancing hiking a mountain, visiting Welsh beaches or visiting Media City? Luckily for you, this course has it all!

Fieldwork is an essential part of Geography and you must complete 4 days of guided fieldwork during the course in order to achieve the qualification. This is done by mandatory fieldwork trips including a compulsory residential trip to Wales at the end of the first year of the course

PROGRESSION

Geography lends itself well as a basis for a degree in Geography or another science. This course will help to develop your communication and team-working skills, as well as research and analysis abilities. Degrees in Surveying, Cartography and Environmental Science are also good fits. Apprenticeships in areas like waste and water management, town planning or tourism will also be helped by a qualification in Geography.

OUTCOMES

Students who complete a qualification in Geography go on to a wide variety of jobs. These can include: Cartographer, Town Planner, Tourism Officer, Nature Conservation Officer or Teacher, to name a few.
