Level 2 Joinery

This College-based qualification is a hands-on, practical course, which is studied by people who want to be employed as site joiners. The course consists of eight units, which are broken into underpinning knowledge and practical units. If you work in the industry, you can build this course up into a full NVQ qualification by obtaining evidence of your abilities. For more information about this, ask to speak to a tutor.

On each level you will undertake a range of units all designed to give you the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in Carpentry & Joinery. You will learn about construction technology, how to manufacture and use woodwork joints, safe use and maintenance of tools, and safe use of power tools. As you progress through the levels, you will also learn about erecting structural carcassing, first and second fixing, and the difference between the structural work and finishing work, which takes place after plastering.

Level 2 units:

• Information, quantities and communicating with others
• Building methods and construction technology
• First fixing operations
• Second fixing operations
• Erecting structural carcassing
• Building maintenance
• Circular saws and their uses

3 GCSEs at grade 3 or above, preferably including either English or Maths

During your course, we ensure you develop employability skills and gain the relevant experience for your next steps. On completion of your course the choices can be further study, an apprenticeship or a move into industry. We will provide information, advice and support during your course so you can make informed choices based on your aspirations.
