Course Summary
An Accounts Assistant is an integral part of any team responsible for maintaining an efficient and accurate finance function within an organisation. The Accounts Assistant is responsible for assisting the team of accountants with junior accounting duties. These can vary depending on the team structure, size and type of organisation. The work could include basic bookkeeping activities, working with sales and purchase ledger, performing reconciliations to ensure that records and payments are correct, recording of cash and data entry. An Accounts Assistant can work in almost any sector and potential employers can include corporate businesses, sole traders, partnerships, Local Government, NHS, charities and educational institutions. Accounts Assistants may work in-house for an organisation or work for a firm of accountants or bookkeepers.
Course Details
Training is undertaken in a number of ways in order to meet the needs of the learner and employer. This can be done by attending classes at our local training centres (Hull, Grimsby and Scunthorpe) or using an online platform. You will study the following units:
- Bookkeeping Transactions
- Bookkeeping Controls
- Elements of Costing
- Using Accounting Software
- Work Effectively in Finance

How will it be delivered and assessed?
Bookkeeping Transactions, Bookkeeping Controls, Elements of Costing and Using Accounting Software are assessed by computer based assessment. Work Effectively in Finance is assessed as part of the synoptic assessment which will also test your knowledge of bookkeeping and costing.
The End Point Assessment consists of a discussion based around a portfolio of evidence which you, your assessor and employer will put together over the course of the Apprenticeship. There is also a final synoptic test. We will support you every step of the way and ensure you are ready for your computer based assessments and your end point assessment.
Entry requirements
GCSE Maths and English grade 4/C or equivalent are preferred, However, if you do not have these grades then we can help you to gain Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English.

A key part of this Apprenticeship is working with an employer. IIf you are looking for an accounts/finance role, we can find the right employer for you and deliver this Apprenticeship alongside it. This Apprenticeship can open up a range of further career opportunities and lead to progression onto the Assistant Accountant Apprenticeship at Level 3. Many of our employers look to progress their Apprentices from level 2, through to level 3 and 4. At level 4 you will become a Professional Accounting Technician.
