Course Summary

Biology A level will give you the skills to make connections and associations with all living things around you. Biology literally means the study of life and if that's not important, what is? Being such a broad topic, you're bound to find a specific area of interest, plus it opens the door to a fantastic range of interesting careers.

Course Details

In the first year you will study 4 of the units which covers content such as biological molecules and cell structure, DNA and chromosomes, protein synthesis and DNA replication, cell exchange processes, digestion and absorption, heart and circulatory system, and gas exchange. The second year covers topics 5 to 8, with content including photosynthesis and respiration, ecology, nerves and muscles, receptors and stimuli, genetics and inheritance, control of gene expression, genetic engineering and gene technologies.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will develop your knowledge and understanding through a combination of theory based and practical sessions in the classroom and laboratory and through field work.

A-Level biology is assessed at the end of the two year course by three examinations:

Paper 1 2 hours - covers topics 1-4

Paper 2 2 hours - covers topics 5-8

Paper 3 2 hours - covers topics 1-8

All papers require students to demonstrate relevant practical and mathematical skills.

Entry requirements

To study A Level courses you'll need: 5 GCSEs at 9-5 plus aGrade 6 in Biology/Combined Science.
