Preparing for Adulthood - Y9+
“Preparing for Adulthood” is something that everyone does, whether they realise it or not. It is about growing up and becoming more independent. Extra support is often offered to young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to help them get ready for becoming an adult.
If you have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) you will have a Preparing for Adulthood meeting when you are in Year 9 and these will continue to be a part of your EHCP annual reviews every year. If you don't have an EHCP, it is still important to think about these things and you will still find these sections useful.
Preparing for Adulthood meetings are an opportunity for you to discuss your future with the professionals who support you. You might talk about:
- Education and/or training and employment after school Year 11
- Independent living
- Participating in society/being part of your local community
- Being as healthy as possible in adult life
The >log on | move on> website has lots of information which can help you get ready for Education and Training parts of these meetings. For help with other parts of Preparing for Adulthood, there are some other useful websites listed at the bottom of this page. Scroll down to find them.

Researching your options
Preparing for Adulthood is thinking about your future, and making sure you are ready. The first step for a lot of people is to consider their education and training options after school.
You can find out more about your options for education and/or training by clicking on ‘find out more’ below’. You can also search for courses and apprenticeships on the >log on | move on> website by clicking on ‘courses and apprenticeships’. Close the tab if you want to return to this page.
This is Me
In your >log on | move on> learner account, you will find a tool called 'This is Me'. This tool was created in partnership with young people with SEND to help them with their Preparing for Adulthood discussions.
'This is Me' helps you to record what is important to you now and think about what is important to you for your future. You can share this with professionals to help them understand how they can support you and what you might need help with.
There are lots of sections, but you don’t have to complete it in one go. You can save your answers so you can complete one section at a time if you like. You can also update it if you change your mind about a topic later.
Find 'This is Me' in your >log on | move on> in the ‘tools’ section of your learner account. Click on the button below to log in. If you need help with your log in details, you can ask someone at school or use the 'get in touch' button to send the >log on | move on> team a message.
