About us
HLC is the lead partner for Springboard and This-Ability, which are part-financed by the European Union through the European Social Fund (ESF) and supported by the National Lottery Community Fund.
What we do
If you are aged between 16 to 29 and live in Hull or 16-24 and live in the East Riding and are currently unemployed or inactive, we can provide support to develop your skills and qualifications to help you progress to employment or further learning.
Through our bespoke key-worker model we can offer you access to further training, developing your employability skills, mental health support, a dedicated pathway for those with disabilities, as well as work experience and voluntary opportunities, to help you present yourself as a perfect candidate for potential employers. We can also provide support to develop your business plan if you are considering self-employment.

To be eligible for this support you must be -
aged 16 to 29 if a Hull resident
or
aged 16 to 24 if an East Riding resident
unemployed or inactive (if you are receiving Jobseeker's Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Universal Credit or not claiming a benefit)

CHARLIE (22) SHARES HIS STORY INTO WORK THROUGH SPRINGBOARD AND KICKSTART....
"I originally came to Goodwin as a learner on the Springboard's 'DO IT' project with Goodwin Development Trust. My key Worker was Thom Sheppard and that’s where my journey begins.
I was fresh out of university with a Sociology Degree but I had no direction. That was the main support I needed. This lack of direction led to doubting myself on every turn, this all changed at Goodwin.
On the programme I got involved with a few different activities. These included the game design sessions and the job club. They all helped me to show my current skills-set but also identified where I needed to improve. The biggest help for me was the weekly one-to-one session. We had chats about shared interests but also there was a big focus on work, such as CV writing and preparing for myself for working life
IT'S THE FIRST TIME I'VE EVER RECEIVED SUCH ONE-TO-ONE SUPPORT....
"Thom was the one who highlighted the Kickstart position that was available with Goodwin on the This-Ability project. He, along with other staff on the programme, supported me with the whole process of applying for the role. They helped me prepare my CV and even set-up a mock interview for me. This was probably the first time I had ever experienced this level of individual support; it heightened my confidence to levels it had never reached before.
After going through the application process and the interview experience, I got a call the next day saying that I had got the job. I was both shocked but extremely proud. I immediately called Thom and told him the news; shouts of celebration echoed from his end of the phone.
I started the Kickstart role as a Youth Opportunities Facilitator on the This-Ability project with Goodwin back in May. I have loved every moment of it and I have now been successful in gaining a contract of employment with them.
THIS ROLE HAS MADE ME REALISE HOW MUCH I WANT TO HELP OTHERS....
In terms of the future for me, my only goal is to continue working with people and to support them through their own personal journey. I cannot thank Thom and all the team enough for all the help they've given me!"
MC4C Participant James D Music Producer

Determined to turn his passion for making music into his main source of living and take control of his future following redundancy due to COVID, James contacted MC4C to help him set up his own business as a music producer. So, he could go from freelancer to full-time, self-employed business owner and start doing what he loves every day!
Last summer James heard about MC4C through his work coach at the Job Centre. He found out about their ‘Big 13’ business support skills programme and decided to get in touch to see how they could help him.
He’d been working part-time in retail alongside his music production and DJ event organising, before sadly being laid off due to the pandemic. The lockdown also affected his freelance work, as bars and night clubs were all closed.
In August he started with MC4C. He was supported by them to complete their Big 13 Business Skills programme. He received all his learning and help online. He gained knowledge about how to produce a business plan, how to analyse profit and loss effectively, marketing techniques and use of social media, costings and how to register his business with HMRC. He attended the programme three times a week, through remote delivery, using video conference technology.
James really enjoyed all the sessions and found them to be useful. He said, ‘The support I’ve received from Graham and Charlene at MC4C has been brilliant. Their help has enabled me to develop an effective business plan to launch my own music production company – ‘Room 73’. The programme was delivered at a pace that suited me and the online group sessions were only small, so I got to know others doing the same thing, and it was good to talk to them about their plans.’
In just over four months James has received the bespoke support he needed to launch his own business. He’s now enjoying meeting like-minded musicians as the music scene begins to open up again throughout the country. Making his dream become a reality!
