Course Summary

In Partnership with Actual Size Theatre and Empath Action CIC.

This one-year, full-time Level 4 programme awards a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Acting. Upon completion, you will have the option to progress to a Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND).

Professional development is at the heart of this course, and you will have

the opportunity to develop as a dramatic theatre artist in a truly creative and

collaborative way. This course will provide you with the opportunity to apply

your skills development in studio settings and in a diverse range of performances.

Year One (HNC) focuses on cultivating your core performance and theatre skills within a collaborative, supportive environment. In Year Two (HND), you will sharpen your professional edge by building on that foundation and pursuing independent lines of inquiry. By engaging directly with industry experts, such as Screen Yorkshire, you’ll gain the firsthand insights and practical experience essential to evolving as a versatile performing arts actor and practitioner.

Through practical classes you will develop a wide range of performance techniques that are drawn from world-renowned practitioners and theorists. You will develop a robust professional toolkit, encompassing vocal and physical training, improvisation, and essential stagecraft, alongside the study various acting techniques. The course empowers you to take charge of your career by bridging the gap between creative vision and professional reality. You will gain an understanding of the business and professional structures of the sector. You will explore the foundational concepts of performance theory to inform your creative choices and develop the skills to devise theatre, lead workshops and cultivate the confidence to direct your own work and facilitate your own theatrical projects. You will perform in multiple productions, applying advanced techniques to refine your stagecraft, working closely with peers and directors in a supportive setting to bring scripts—and original ideas—from the page to the stage. Beyond the stage, you will gain a clear, practical understanding of how the performance industry operates.

Course Details

This course follows the new HN Pearson Suite and students will study the following Level 4 Modules during the year.

Module A: Process and Practice

A1: Concept and Development

A2: Creative Project

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The course is assessed through coursework that you produce as you complete each assignment for the Module you are studying, this may include performance pieces, skills development, written work, research, presentations and reflective practice which allow you to evaluate your learning and highlight your strengths and areas for further development.

Assessment is ongoing within sessions and will comprise of peer and self-assessment as well as tutor assessment. There are at least 2 formative assessments during each module assignment and 1 summative submission that ends with a final grade.

Entry requirements

64 UCAS tariff points from A Levels or a Level 3 Diploma in a related subject.

Or An Access course.

GCSE Grade 9-4 in English Language (or equivalent qualification) is required.

Those with previous experience or learning that is relevant may be eligible

via our RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) process for accreditation towards this course.

All applicants are required to audition, consisting of an interview and a workshop, alongside preparing a monologue of your choice lasting between 1 and 1.5 minutes long.
