Course Summary
In the first year learners will complete their NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing, this will provide learners with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed to work as a Gym Instructor in the Sport and Active Leisure sector. Learners will then be able to progress on to the Level 3 Personal Training qualification or go into employment as a Gym Instructor. In the second year of study learners will aim make a positive contribution to the workplace and to the health and wellbeing of a broad range of clients with different needs, in different types of environments. The qualification is mapped to the CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) Personal Trainer professional standards so will enable you to pursue a career as a Personal Trainer.
Course Details
1st Year - The NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing will provide learners with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed to work as a Gym Instructor in the Sport and Active Leisure sector. This qualification is aimed at learners that wish to progress on to the Level 3 Personal Training qualification or go into employment as a Gym Instructor.
The Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing requires learners to successfully complete 6 mandatory units:
Anatomy and physiology for exercise
Maximising the customer experience in a gym environment
Supporting client health and well-being
Conducting client consultations and gym inductions
Planning and reviewing gym-based exercise programmes
Instructing and supervising gym-based exercise programmes
2nd Year - The NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training will provide learners with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed to work as a Personal Trainer in the Sport and Active Leisure sector. This qualification is aimed at learners that are not currently in the role, who may go on to be employed or self-employed as a Personal Trainer.
The Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training requires learners to successfully complete 6 mandatory units:
Applied anatomy and physiology for activity, health and fitness
Client motivation and lifestyle management
Programming personal training sessions
Delivering personal training sessions
Nutrition to support a physical activity programme
Business acumen for personal trainers
How will it be delivered and assessed?
This programme is part exam and part coursework assessed; delivered through a series of innovative projects and designed to develop your independent learning as the year progresses.

Successful achievement of this qualification will provide entry to the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) as a practitioner (exercise and fitness). This accredited achievement is valued and recognised by employers and can assist you to increase/enhance your career opportunities, progression and earning potential. This allows graduates to progress straight into employment within the exercise and fitness sector.
