Course Summary

Further Mathematics is a second A level in Maths. Students take Further Mathematics in addition to an A Level Mathematics course.

It is an advantage, and for some institutions essential, if you intend on studying maths at university and is well respected as a fourth A level indicating good study skills, dedication and an enquiring mind. It makes the transition from sixth form to university courses which are mathematically rich that much easier.

For someone who enjoys mathematics, the Further Mathematics course provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and more sophisticated mathematical concepts. It is a rewarding, stimulating and empowering course and covers statistical ideas such as discrete and continuous distributions, correlation and regression, and statistical tests. Topics including matrices and complex numbers are introduced for the first time, and algebra, calculus and trigonometry are studied in greater depth. The course also looks at forces and equilibrium, kinematics and momentum.
