Level 3 Light Vehicle Maintenance Apprenticeship

The Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle) Apprenticeship Standard is for those individuals that we would like develop a career as a motor vehicle technician. A motor vehicle technician services and repairs light vehicles, working in either a dealership that focuses on a particular manufacturer, or for an independent garage.

Working on all systems found within the vehicle, the nature of the work ranges from replacing simple parts, right through to diagnosing and rectifying complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment. This apprenticeship is three years in duration and is the equivalent of a Level 3 qualification. 4 days per week you would be employed and work in the workplace, one day per week you would attend the GTA for practical and theory training and assessments.

• Use systems and equipment to carry out routine services and inspections
• Understand wheels and tyres construction
• Understand engine types and configurations
• Diagnose and repair faults, and much more

In addition to this you will undertake a IMI Level 3 Award in Automotive Refrigerant Handling (F-Gas) and Maths and English functional skills if required.

Throughout the apprenticeship you will be assessed by your employer and the GTA. Reviewing your progress via summative assessments with gateway 1 at the end of your first year and gateway 2 at the end of your second year. These assessments are designed to review your behaviour, knowledge and skills.

In addition, you, your employer and the GTA will maintain an E-Log book evidencing progress over the duration of the apprenticeship.

At the end of your third year you will then complete and End Point Assessment. This is a two day assessment covering diagnostic and repair activities across a range of vehicle systems.

There are no formal qualifications required to commence this course however a good level of Maths and English is advantageous.

Candidates will be assessed on an individual basis and will need to attend an selection assessment session before being accepted onto the course - on application you will be invited to the next available selection assessment session.

With experience, you could become a senior technician, workshop supervisor or garage manager.

You could work as a breakdown engineer or MOT tester, or specialise in a particular area like motorsport engineering.

You could also work on electric and hybrid cars or specialise in tuning and modifying vehicles for higher performance.

You could also set up your own business.
