This BTEC Level 3 Construction and Civil Engineering in the Built Environment provides specialist content that relates to construction in Civil Engineering.

Course Details

The qualification aims to provide an understanding of the Civil Engineering industry, including Construction Principles, Construction Design, Health and Safety, Tendering and Estimating, Site Engineering for Construction, Highway Construction and Maintenance in Civil Engineering.

This course will enable you to progress your career in the construction and built environment sector in jobs such as: Architect, Quantity Surveyor, Estimator, Building Surveyor, Project Manager, Site Manager, Civil Engineer, Surveying, Highways Construction etc Many of these jobs combine office-based activities with on-site visits to projects and building sites.

You also have the opportunity transfer from a study programme onto an apprenticeship course if you secure employment in the industry at any point during the course. All students are guaranteed some on-the-job work experience, regardless of level or ability.


You will complete the 90 Credit Diploma in your first year and continue to the Extended Diploma in your second year.

The Construction and the Built Environment BTEC 90 Credit Diploma Level 3 programme is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels and consists of 9 units of study.

The Construction and the Built Environment Extended Diploma Level 3 programme is equivalent to 3 A Levels and consists of 18 units of study.


On this BTEC Level 3 Construction in Civil Engineering and the Built Environment course you will study:

- The design of construction and how to communicate your design in drawings and specifications

- How to carry out Specialist Civil Engineering Techniques site surveys.

- How to interpret underlying principles and construction methods used in Highway Construction and Maintenance in Civil Engineering

- How to develop knowledge and apply skills to produce graphical information by manual and computer-aided design (CAD) methods.

- How to calculate the cost of construction works and maintain the progress against the budget

Entry requirements

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade A*-C (9-4) including English, maths and/or a Level 2 BTEC Diploma (including maths at Merit or above).

Your next steps...

This course over two years is the same as three A levels and gives you the UCAS points to progress onto Higher Education

Students who are successful at Level 3 will be suited to either employment or Higher Apprenticeships.

Those wishing to progress further may wish to progress to a HNC or HND
