Level 2 Applied Science

Welcome to the Level 2 Applied Science course. This is an exciting and practical programme designed to introduce you to the key areas of science and how they are used in real-life situations and careers.

Throughout this course, you will study a range of scientific disciplines, including biology, chemistry, and physics, alongside specialist topics such as CSI and laboratory-based investigations. This will help you develop a broad understanding of how science works in the world around us.

You will take part in a variety of hands-on practical activities, experiments, and investigations. These will allow you to build essential laboratory skills, such as working safely, using scientific equipment correctly, and recording accurate results.

Assessment on this course is varied to help you develop different skills. You will complete a range of coursework assignments, including reports, presentations, and practical write-ups, as well as external exams. This combination will help you build both your scientific knowledge and your ability to apply it.

The BTEC Level 2 in Applied Science at Bishop Burton College uses a practical, hands-on approach to learning, combining classroom theory with extensive laboratory-based activities. Students will engage in a wide range of experiments, investigations and real-world scenarios to develop their scientific understanding and technical skills. Teaching is delivered through a mix of interactive lessons, group work, independent research and project-based assignments, encouraging active participation and collaboration.

Learners are supported to develop confidence in applying scientific principles to vocational contexts, with a strong emphasis on problem-solving, critical thinking and reflective practice. Assessment is primarily coursework-based, allowing students to demonstrate their progress through practical tasks, reports and presentations rather than high-pressure exams.

Our approach ensures that students gain both the knowledge and the professional behaviours needed to progress successfully into further study, apprenticeships or science-related careers.

Work experience - Mandatory 40 Hours Work Experience. This course has internal assessments and exams. Internal assessment will include assignments that are sent with a 2 week period to complete.

4 GCSEs grade 3 or equivalent

Level 3 Forensic Science.

The BTEC Level 2 in Applied Science provides a strong foundation for a range of exciting career pathways within the science sector. After completing the course, students may progress to: Laboratory Technician supporting scientific testing and research in labs. Healthcare Support Worker working alongside professionals in medical or care settings. Environmental Technician helping to monitor and protect the environment. Food Science or Quality Control Assistant ensuring quality and safety in food production. Many students choose to continue their studies by progressing onto the Level 3 qualification in Forensic Science.
