Course Summary

Geology is a diverse and fascinating science which requires plenty of curiosity and investigative work. By the end of the course, you will be able to draw conclusions from incomplete data, show awareness of the wider environment and develop an analytical approach to real-life problems through a programme of 20 practical and field investigations.

In the 21st century world, geologists have a key role to play in studying and predicting natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and landslides; finding and extracting mineral, water and energy resources and in providing geotechnical data for engineering projects.

Within Geology, you will also be looking into Earth’s past: learning about the evolution of life (including dinosaurs and mass extinctions), ancient climate change, plate tectonics and the rock cycle; as well as looking forwards to how human activities impact our planet’s resources and climate.

Field trips are an integral part of the course with both local daytrips and a 4-day residential to the Lake District. Geology is an excellent choice to combine with other science subjects, engineering and social science subjects.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

This consists of three examination papers as well as a practical endorsement.

Paper 1: Geological investigations (2 hours and 15 minutes)

Consists of 2 data response questions and an investigation of the geology of an area shown on a simplified geological map

Paper 2: Geological principles and processes (1 hour and 45 minutes)

Consists of 6 data response questions

Paper 3: Geological applications (2 hours)

Consists of 2 data response questions, an investigation of the geology of an area from a Geological Survey map extract and 3 data response questions from chosen option

Practical endorsement – non examined assessment, this involves the assessment of a candidates practical competence, this will be reported separately and will not contribute to the final grade.
