Course Summary

English Language is an exciting course which is very different to what you will have studied at GCSE. Itdraws on all aspects of English, looking at written and spoken varieties, as well as looking at key issuesof gender, power and technology. You will also focus on language change, child language acquisitionand a creative writing element. It focuses on modern language in use, looking at a variety of shortertexts and the reasons behind their production.

Course Details

Throughout Year 12, you will explore many different examples of language in action, considering howlanguage is used in media to represent a range of ideas and attitudes. You will also consider whatimpacts an individual’s language by considering areas such as age, gender and ethnicity. As part ofthis study, you will engage with a range of linguistic theories, considering academic research intolanguage. In Year 13, you will study Child Language Development, considering the different theories asto how and why humans learn to speak. You will also look at language development and change overtime, evaluating reasons for change and if the language can ever be controlled.

The course is a two year course, with a possibility of a one year AS version. It consists of two exams and a language investigation piece of coursework. The exams are worth 40% each, and the coursework will be 20% All exams will be taken at the end of your second year.

Entry requirements

As well as meeting our general entry requirements for Level 3 study plus a grade 5 or above in GCSE English Language.

English Language is excellent for teaching (both primary and secondary), journalism, public relationsand helps in any career which deals with the use of language on a daily basis. Many students progressinto degree level study in either English or in a wide range of subjects.
