Course Summary
Course Details
Students successfully completing the first year of this course will be able to access an additional year to achieve an Extended Diploma in Applied Science to gain access to university or employment.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Lessons take place in purpose-built science labs with modern facilities and good equipment. You will be taught by subject specialists in each area of the course with at least one tutor for each of biology, chemistry and physics. Your tutors will guide you in developing the necessary practical skills as well as learning the theoretical concepts and applications. There is a lot of practical work which often forms part of your course assessment, so good attendance is vital.
The bulk of the assessment for this course is through internal coursework, which means that you will complete tasks to a set deadline that are marked by your College tutors. This involves a lot of practical work done in the science labs during lesson time, as well as applying the theory you have studied to solving problems or discussing its uses. For each piece of work you will be given guidance on what is expected and a set of written instructions, and you will receive written feedback after you submit. In some cases there is an opportunity to make a second submission if you have not met all the criteria at the first attempt.
There are also two external tasks each year that are sent away from College to be graded. These are a written exam in each year, a practical task and an activity looking at how science is communicated.
