Course Summary

AQA Art, Craft, and Design at A Level is a two-year program that develops students’ practical skills, conceptual understanding, and critical thinking in the visual arts. The course encourages experimentation with materials, techniques, and processes, while also fostering personal and meaningful creative expression. Students are expected to explore a wide range of traditional and contemporary art forms, including painting, sculpture, textiles, photography, printmaking, ceramics, and mixed media.

Course Details

Component 1: Personal Investigation (60% of A Level)

A sustained project that includes research, practical experimentation, and the development of ideas leading to a final outcome.

Component 2: Externally Set Assignment (40% of A Level)

Students respond to a set theme released by AQA in February of Year 13.

Preparation Period: Typically 8–12 weeks of research and experimentation.

Timed Examination: A 15-hour practical exam where students produce a final outcome.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment Focus:

  • AO1: Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding.
  • AO2: Refine ideas through experimentation with materials and processes.
  • AO3: Record ideas, observations, and insights in a sketchbook, journal, or portfolio.
  • AO4: Present a personal and meaningful final outcome.
