Course Summary

Toranj Tuition was established to stimulate social mobility and facilitate equal opportunities through educational activities. We run programmes designed to alleviate Hull’s long-term problems of poor-quality education, deprivation and unemployment by addressing the link between poverty and educational underachievement and unemployment. We are based in Old Town Hull, at the Toranj Learning Centre (TLC), where we provide services to a growing number of local asylum seekers, refugees and migrants.

The Iranian Community of Hull (ICOH), our project partner, is a community organisation which aims to improve the lives of local communities, particularly Iranians and other newcomers to the United Kingdom.

Course Details

The ESOL for Work and Employability programme is a flexible training course, designed to be adapted to the individual learner’s needs. Our training is designed for learners for whom English is an additional language. We also offer guidance and translation services through our newcomer’s employability helpdesk.

All learners will receive 80-hours of training in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and digital skills. The learners placed in our ESOL groups (of no more than 5 learners) and are divided by level, from entry to advanced English. Learners will work closely with their tutors, who adapt their lesson plans to fit learner needs, and they will receive an ESOL textbook to keep. The current ESOL groups are:

  • Introduction to English
  • Beginners ESOL
  • Elementary ESOL
  • Pre-Intermediate ESOL
  • Intermediate ESOL
  • Pre-IELTS Exam (Advanced ESOL)
  • IETLS Exam Booster (Advanced ESOL)

In combination with the ESOL and digital skill training, learners will access two of three 10-hour classes: Driving Theory, British Citizenship or Digital Skills (ICT). Additionally, there are compulsory workshops for all learners, in:

  • Finding Work (job search and interview skills)
  • Learning a Foreign Language (study skills workshop)
  • New Start (socialisation activities to combat loneliness)
  • Planning for the Future (education and career goals)
  • Challenges and Opportunities (return to education or work)

The newcomer’s employability helpdesk will run for 20-hours per week. This helpdesk assists learners in finding and applying to jobs, writing CVs, registering at GP’s offices, enrolling children in schools or child care and providing translations. The beneficiaries will receive career support from the helpdesk, where they can find help completing job applications, writing cover letters and preparing for interviews.

By the end of the programme all learners will have:

  • Improved their English and digital skills
  • Created a Curriculum Vitae (CV) and developed their employability skills
  • Attained an Employability Passport certificate
  • Learned about British society and culture
