Course Summary
The Automotive Retail Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Light Vehicle Apprenticeship Standard is for technicians who service and repair light vehicles. This standard has replaced the SASE level 3 framework.
It is a three year course with 4 days per week spent in the workplace and one day release day per week spent at the GTA. In the workplace you will work alongside qualified technicians with experience and be mentored within a practical environment. You will work on different car systems and different types of light vehicles depending on your workplace.
At college you will learn the theory side of the qualification along with practical training in our state of the art workshop.

- Main components of Light Vehicles
- Use systems and equipment to carry out routine services and inspections
- Understand wheels and tyres construction
- Understand engine types and configurations
- Diagnose and repair faults, and much more
In addition to this you will undertake a IMI Level 2 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicles Routine Maintenance Activities and Maths and English functional skills if required.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Throughout the apprenticeship you will be assessed by employers and the GTA. Reviewing your progress via summative assessments with gateway 1 at the end of your first year and gateway 2 at the end of your second year. These assessments are designed to review your behaviour, knowledge and skills.
In addition, you, your employer and the GTA will maintain an E-Log book evidencing progress over the duration of the apprenticeship.
At the end of your third year you will then complete and End Point Assessment. This is a two day assessment covering diagnostic and repair activities across a range of vehicle systems.
Entry requirements
There are no formal qualifications required to commence this course however a good level of Maths and English is advantageous.
Candidates will be assessed on an individual basis and will need to attend an selection assessment session before being accepted onto the course - on application you will be invited to the next available selection assessment session.
Your next steps...
With experience, you could become a senior technician, workshop supervisor or garage manager.
You could work as a breakdown engineer or MOT tester, or specialise in a particular area like motorsport engineering.
You could also work on electric and hybrid cars or specialise in tuning and modifying vehicles for higher performance.
You could also set up your own business.
