Course Summary

This course gives you the opportunity to find out more about the roles, responsibilities and purpose of the public services and is aimed at giving you an insight into a career in public services such as the Army, the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force, the Police, the Fire and Rescue Service, HM Coastguard, the Prison Service or the Ambulance Service. There is a fitness element and various team working activities as part of the course.

Throughout this programme there is the opportunity to go on external visits, try outdoor activities and guest speakers will visit the college from many of the Public services organisations.

Course Details

A selection of Units delivered includes:

Unit 1 – Public Services skills and support for the community (mandatory)

This includes organising two community tasks to support a local community or charity.

Unit 2 – Employment in Uniformed Public Services (mandatory)

This includes creating your own CV and looking at job roles.

Unit 4 – Activities and teamwork for the Public Services

Within this Unit you will learn about leadership; plan and lead your own activity.

Unit 6 – Expedition and land navigation skills

In this Unit you will learn to navigate using a map and compass and plan a hike in the Yorkshire Wolds and what equipment to carry.

Unit 8 – Crime and its effects on society

This Unit includes visits to Courts/Police stations and guest speakers.

Unit 8 – Community and cultural awareness

In this Unit you will learn about being a good citizen, and multiculturalism within our society.

Unit 10 – Driving in the Public Services

In this Unit you will learn about the process of learning to drive.

Unit 11 – Attending Emergency incidents in the Public Services

In this Unit you cover health and safety/risk assessments for emergency incidents.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

This course is has a combination of external examinations and internally assignments.

Entry requirements

  • Four GCSEs grade D/3 or above
  • Or level one diploma
  • Or introductory diploma
  • Or NVQ level one
