Apprenticeships - Apprenticeship Standard 023 - L2 Property Maintenance Operative

A property maintenance operative can expect to be employed as a Maintenance Assistant/Facilities Assistant/Maintenance Technician/Caretaker/Multi-Skilled Technician.

As a Property Maintenance Operative, you will be employed to optimise property condition and quality and to ensure the building is kept in a safe working condition. You will understand the mechanism of buildings including electrical, plumbing, plant, safety systems and equipment. You will provide response to fault finding. You will ensure prevention of major damage to a building.

What you will study

This apprenticeship standard will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to be a qualified property maintenance operative, whilst developing behaviours required by this role

Whilst there is no mandatory on-programme qualification for knowledge or competence in relation to this standard, this programme will follow the recommended training specification of the City and Guilds Level 2 qualifications. This will enable you to develop knowledge and skills that will include

• Health and safety
• The knowledge and skills to carry out repairs to the fabric of a building,
• The knowledge and skills to carry out repairs to plumbing and drainage systems
• The knowledge and skills to carry out repairs to electrical distribution, safe repair of electrical installation to legal requirements, for example replacing damaged sockets, plugs, lighting and fuses.
• The knowledge and skills to implement energy, environment and sustainable practices
• Customer service

In addition, apprentices must complete, or have previously completed, recognised English and Maths qualifications (this could be GCSE, Functional Skills or other).

How you will be assessed

Throughout the training period college lecturers/assessors will assess progress in relation to the knowledge element of the standard; a college assessor will work with you in the development and assessment of the competence portfolio.

In addition, throughout the training period both college lecturers/assessors and your employer representative will complete progress reviews.

When both your employer and the college consider you competent in all the knowledge, skills and behaviours you will be entered in for the End Point Assessment.

This is a three-part independent assessment.
1. Knowledge assessment
2. Skills assessment,
3. Interview, behaviours assessment

Successful assessments are graded pass/merit/distinction.

Whilst employers will set the entry specification suitable for the correct level of the individual, it is recommended that apprentices hold a level 1 qualification in maths and English.

Further Study

Advanced apprenticeship in Facilities Management. This will be available at Wakefield College, for 2021.

Career Opportunities

This apprentice standard is recognised by the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) providing Associate Membership for the apprentice whilst studying. BIFM have confirmed resources and learning materials will be available for the apprentice to support them throughout their learning journey.
