Course Summary

On this course students will learn about animal care and develop the skills needed to care for and handle a variety of animals.

Course Details

Students will learn how to plan and monitor animal feeding as well as learn how to maintain animal health, welfare and accommodation. The course themes include planning and monitoring animal feeding, maintaining animal health, biology, welfare and accommodation, animal handling and grooming.

There are lectures, talks from guest speakers, visits, practical sessions in the Animal Unit and work related experience. Students' work is assessed continually throughout the course.

Students studying at our York Campus have the choice of two pathways; Companion Animal or Zoo Animal. Students at York will study this course in our Animal Management Facility and Wildlife Conservation Park. These facilities home a range of animals including reptiles, amphibians, mammals, birds, fish and invertebrates.

Students studying at our Wakefield centre will spend part of their time at York and part at Wakefield. Students will study this course in our Animal Management Facility and Wildlife Conservation Park based at York and at Bull Ring House in Wakefield.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment: One externally set, externally moderated assignment. Two externally set, externally marked exams, sat under examination conditions. Optional unit assignments, externally set, internally marked and externally moderated.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above to include two from English, Maths and Science, with at least a grade 2 in the remaining subject. Alternatively a suitable Level 1 vocational qualification with English and Maths at Level 1.

Your next steps...

Upon successful completion of this course students may progress on to a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management.
