Applying for a job

Application forms can look daunting but they are just another way the employer can work out whether you are the right person for the job, so take care and practice:

  • Print a copy of the application form to practice on.
  • Not all applications are online.  If completing a handwritten application use black ink.
  • If you are doing an online application, print off a copy or save to a file on your computer this will be useful if you need to complete future applications.
  • Follow the instructions and answer all the questions on the application form.
  • Where you are asked to describe any work experience, voluntary work or previous employment you’ve had, take care to include all your skills and abilities that you have used previously in relation to the job for which you are applying.
  • When you’ve completed your application, you may want to get somebody to double check it for you, for example a family member, teacher/tutor, friend or support worker.
  • Keep a copy of your completed application form as this will help you prepare for any interviews you are invited to attend.
  • Make sure that you send off the application form in good time before the application deadline date.
  • If in doubt about completing an application make sure you seek further help and advice before sending it off.
