Supported Internships (for EHCP learners)
Supported Internship
A Supported Internship is a full-time programme, in which young people complete work placements within local businesses. You will be supported with the transition into employment by developing employability and life skills through learning in the workplace. To be eligible for a Supported Internship, you must be aged 16 to 24 years and have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
FAQ's
Where will it take place?
You will split your time between being based with an employer for your work placements and time spent at an education/training centre. You will spend the majority of your time in the workplace.
How long will it last?
A Supported Internship normally lasts for a year, including unpaid work placements that may be with the same employer or several different employers.
What happens after?
Wherever possible, interns will be supported to move into paid employment at the end of the Supported Internship. You can be provided with ongoing support with finding employment if this is required after finishing the internship.
What will I do?
Interns complete real job roles on their placements and you will be required to comply with real job conditions, such as timekeeping and dress code. Alongside your time at the employer, you will also complete a personalised study programme that includes the chance to study for relevant qualifications in English and maths (if required).
Benefits of a Supported Internship
- Develop skills valued by employers
- Have chance to show your value in the workplace
- Build confidence in your own abilities
- Gain experience to put on your CV
- Improve your skills in English and maths
- Become an independent traveller
- Show everybody you can do it!
How is a Supported Internship different from an Apprenticeship?
They are similar, but have a few important differences. Young people receive a higher level of support on a Supported Internship. This typically includes a job coach and further help with the learning that you do away from the workplace. Supported Internships give you more time to progress into an Apprenticeship if this is what you would like to do. Unlike Apprenticeships, you will not receive payment during a Supported Internship.
