Course Summary

This course is ideal for learners who would like to find out how the legal system works. This involves studying the differences between criminal and civil law, the court system, dispute resolution and the people in the legal system. It also covers where English and Welsh law comes from, how they are applied and interpreted as well as the institutions and the laws of the European Union.

Course Details

Core Units:

  • Dispute Solving in Civil War: You will learn about civil law, courts and disputes as well as alternative methods of resolution.
  • Investigating Aspects of Criminal Law and the Legal System: You will develop the skills to investigate and research how different laws are made both inside and outside Parliament and then interpreted in courts.
  • Applying the Law: In this unit, you will consider the impact and consequences of the crime.
  • Homicide: Students will take a deeper look into the lawn murder, manslaughter as well as involuntary manslaughter.
  • Aspects of Property Offences and Police Powers: Students will look at the law of theft, robbery and burglary as well as sentences for these crimes.
  • Aspects of Tort: This unit adds to the negligence content of Unit 1 but three additional specific areas of negligence are considered – economic loss, negligent misstatements and psychiatric harm are covered.

How will it be delivered?

This course is assessed by exams and coursework.

Entry requirements

GCSE Grade 4 in English and Maths with an average points score of 3.2 or above.
