Course Summary

This qualification is for anyone who is interested in a career in the hospitality sector. It is particularly aimed at 16-19 years olds working towards full Level 2 qualification and skilled employment, including apprenticeships. This is ideal as a pre-apprenticeship route or for those students needing extra support in their learning journey.

Course Details

The course is an introduction to the hospitality and catering industry for students who would like to prepare to enter the hospitality industry and may need a little extra help with confidence building, developing literacy and numeracy. You will gain experience in:

• Customer Service in the Hospitality Industry
• Introduction to the Hospitality Industry
• Food Service
• Basic Food Preparation and Cooking
• Food Safety
• Serving Food and Drink

There will be opportunities to work within our industrial kitchen and our Ashfields Restaurant to develop sector specific skills.

All Foundation programmes include social and work skills and GCSE English Language and Maths.

How will it be delivered?

Attendance is full-time. Your studies will be across three to four full days per week in College. These will be mainly workshop (kitchen or restaurant) based but you will also experience formal classroom learning. All of your sessions will be college based with 20% in the classroom and 80% undertaking simulated practical activities. Part of your development will involve working within our commercial restaurant and interacting with both internal and external customers. Our methods of delivery will include student focused learning and formal teaching sessions, accompanied by workshops, tutorials, some independent studies, problem solving and work-based learning.

You will be continuously assessed during the course through projects and skills checks, practical assessments and assignment work.

Entry requirements

3 or 4 GCSE subjects at grade 2, ideally including English and Maths.

Your next steps...

You can progress to Level 2 Hospitality Services, that includes food and beverage service and professional cookery, depending on progress throughout your programme. Alternatively, you may wish to take up a job opportunity in the hospitality and catering industry. Potential job occupations include Hotel Porter, Hotel Receptionist, Hotel Room Attendant, Food Processing Operative and Fast Food Service Assistant.
