Why should I study this course?
Prepare for a career in the world of business, gain practical insight into how products and services work and discover why business is so important for the economy. This is a vocational course which will help prepare you for working in business and includes classroom based study and a significant placement in industry.
Most importantly, the course will help develop the skills which employers value and expect from prospective workers of the future. It is an ideal stepping stone to either a job in business or perhaps further study in a business related field at university such as marketing, finance or personnel.
This course is for you if:
...you would like to study a subject that uses a variety of learning activities, including visits to local or regional businesses, a major work placement and the opportunity to hear from experienced speakers who are industry experts. You should have a genuine interest in the management and administrative sector of the business world.
What will I study?
The course is made up of two parts:
- A management and administration core which covers the knowledge and skills required to work n a variety of business areas. You would study a variety o topics including the types and nature of businesses, organisations and structures, the role of people, the importance of quality and compliance, finance, management change and business behaviours.
- The choice of studying a specialist occupational area in either business improvement, team leadership/management or business support.
What skills do I need?
- A commitment and interest in finding out more about the business world
- A real desire to spend a significant amount of time on work placement
- A willingness to find information and expand your knowledge through research
- The basic ability to express work ideas in clear written and spoken English
How will I be taught?
You will be taught by enthusiastic staff who share your interest in Business. You will experience a wide variety of learning activities during the course including the chance to take part in several visits to local or regional businesses as well as the opportunity to hear from speakers who work in the business world.
Each year, for example, we visit an Amazon Distribution Centre to see how one of the world's most successful companies does it!
You will have the opportunity of a prolonged period of work placement as a key part of the course.
You will be expected to complete at least 6 hours of private study a week. This work is outside of the classroom and will enable you to complete your course tasks and achieve your target grade.
How is the course assessed?
The course is assessed through a variety of methods. There are traditional exams and an employer set project to cover the core part of the course. The occupational component is assessed by the completion of an extensive set assignment.
What materials will I need to provide?
The college will provide you with basic textbooks and teaching materials. You will need to purchase paper, pens and other writing materials. We would advise you to obtain a USB stick to help you with the completion of coursework outside of lessons.
4 or more GCSE grades 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent in 3 or more subjects, including minimum grade 4(C) in English Language.
If you are interested in joining the College we will arrange a meeting with an experienced subject counsellor who will help you choose courses that best suit your ambitions and achievements.
All entry requirement details are correct at the time of publication, however, the college may need to make some changes in the light of student demand, staff availability and external factors beyond the college's control.
This course will give you an excellent understanding of how businesses of all sorts work. It will help prepare you for being successful in finding a job in the management and administrative sector of the economy through either employment of as an apprentice.
You may, of course, use the course as a means of securing a Higher Education place on one of the very many business-related degree courses available at university.
