Course Summary

Why should I study this course?

If you have an interest in creating and exploring film making, web design and print-based media products you will enjoy this very interactive, practical course. You will learn new software packages and get to produce video, internet and print-based media products and benefit from using the fantastic facilities in our media centre.

You will develop skills and literacy that are both challenging and fun. You will gain a qualification in Media equivalent to 2 GCSEs, study English and Mathematics up to achieving a grade 4 (C) and complete at least 30 hours’ work experience during the year. This course will lead to an Employability Skills Passport Certificate which will help to prepare you for the workplace, should you choose to enter it after this qualification.

You have an interest in creating and exploring film making and print based media products and if you like learning new software packages and enjoy both practical and written work.

Course Details

What will I study?

You will take three core units:

  • Digital Media and Audiences – Examined
  • Planning and Pitching – Coursework
  • Media Industry in Context – examined

You will also take three specialist units in:

  • Digital Media Production – create your own movie trailers – coursework
  • Digital Audio Production – create and host your own podcast – coursework
  • Digital Editing for moving image – create and edit your own short film – coursework
  • Graphic design for digital media – create media images for promotional material – coursework

You will also undertake a significant amount of work experience outside the college. This will enable you to develop your academic, practical and social skills whilst working in a real environment.

How will it be delivered?

How will I be taught?

Classroom based teaching and learning. Using computer video editing suites, both individually and in groups.

Private study

Students are encouraged to develop their skills outside of the classroom, for example video recording, sound recording and reflective online blogs.

How is the course assessed?

This course has two exams and your work will be assessed throughout the course. You will be given a grade for each unit - Pass, Merit and Distinction and these will be used to calculate your final grade. All coursework units are internally marked and externally moderated.

What materials do I need to provide?

None. You will benefit from using the fantastic facilities in our new Media Centre including industry standard software, high-definition digital cameras and state-of-the-art audio equipment. All equipment can all be booked out to you from the college.

Entry requirements

A minimum of two 3s (Ds) at GCSE or a minimum of a Pass in one Level 2 BTEC or equivalent.


If you are interested in joining the College, we will arrange a meeting with an experienced subject counsellor who will help you to choose courses that best suit your ambitions and achievements.
