Course Summary

Get a broad introduction to vehicle technology and motorsports engineering with this course, which prepares you for a career in the industry or further study. You’ll work on a range of vehicles – including our on-site Formula Ford – and learn the many aspects of the maintenance and technology involved, with modules including removing and refitting components and engine system principles.

Course Details

You will learn both practical and theory elements on this course that directly relate to the study of mechanical systems and running of motorsport vehicles in competition. The course will introduce you to understanding the engineering of these vehicles, identification of their parts and functions, and how they operate as a complete system.

Areas of study and practical work include:

Fault diagnosis

Electrical and electronic principles and components

Removing and refitting components

Engine system principles

Layout and operation of vehicle systems

Wheels, tyres, steering and suspension systems

English and maths

How will it be delivered?

Courses are a mixture of theory and practical work.

Assessment: Ongoing assessments.

Thirty hours of work experience placement at an industry-related business such as garage parts department or engineering-based business.


Students are expected to secure their own employer for work experience, however, our Employability Team can help source one for you.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at least 4 GCSEs at grade E or above including Maths and English (new GCSE grading level 3) with Science desirable. Alternatively a suitable Level 1 vocational qualification with English and Maths at Level 1.

Equipment required

Steel toe-caped boots (around £30), overalls and basic hand tool kit to which the students must cover the costs. If you wish to bring in any further PPE such as goggles, gloves, you are welcomed to to do so. Bursaries are available for students requiring financial assistance.

Your next steps...

Progression and Development Sessions

All students enrolled on a Level 2 or Level 3 course will be required to attend Progression and Development sessions every week. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics from careers and employability, British Values and equality and diversity to essential life skills such as mental health and wellbeing, drugs and alcohol and personal safety.

You could also pursue a apprenticeship, or go into the motorsport industry as a technician.
