Independent Travel Training
The Independent Travel Training course is a new programme that has been devised to support young people with SEND or additional needs to be able to travel by themselves on public transport.
What do you do on the Independent Travel Training Course?
On the course you will be accompanied, supported and assessed on a bus or train route by the Independent Travel Trainer, the journey you would practise would be the journey from home to school/college and return.
This will therefore enable you to have full independence over your travel 5 days a week, as well as giving them the skills to travel independently for life. You and the trainer will then engage in a “phase out” form of support, in which the Travel Trainer supports you in increasing distance and fewer verb
al prompts until you are ready to be shadowed from a distance with no support on the journey. The course covers personal safety, road safety and general travel skills.
